Description: PEN Club Din. 1.50 stamp in Type I with abbreviation dots after ‘XI’ and ‘int’. This stamp was known before the Second World War in ONE example which belonged to Belgrade lawyer Mr. Groj. His copy has not been heard of since and is presumed lost. This is the SECOND recently found example. A great rarity of Yugoslav philately and the summit of every specialised collection of the Kingdom. The stamp is in perfect unmounted mint condition and is offered publicly for the first time.
This stamp has attracted much comment in philatelic press. In his article (Filatelista No. 4/1936 p. 50-57) Mr. Groj explains it genesis as follows:
‘Stamps of Din. 0.50 and 0.75 were printed in Type I whereas all stamps of Din. 3.00, 4.00 and 5.00 were printed in Type II. The value of Din. 1.50 is known in both basic types but only one example has been found in Type I. The printing of PEN Club stamps started with dots after ‘XI’ and ‘int’, i.e. in the first basic type but later following an order the dots were removed from the plate.’
Further he explains:
‘For the value of Din. 1.50 the plate was constructed with dots after ‘XI’ and ‘int’ as for the first two values. Either few left sides of the sheet were printed with dots and not destroyed as printer’s waste, or following the order for the removal of dots, this has not been effected in one place and this error has been noticed in the course of printing and later removed.’
He concludes:
‘Supporting the second theory is the fact that another copy has not been found despite the examination of a large quantity of stamps and sheets aimed at discovering the second example.’
Din. 1.50 stamp in Type I featured in several pre-war catalogues but always without price.
